Water Safety Instructor Course
This course provides instructor
candidates the training needed to teach courses in the American Red
Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. Students develop their
understanding of how to use the course materials, how to teach swim lessons and how to evaluate participants' progress. Students should bring a lunch, snack, water bottle, swim suit
and towel each day. Attendance at all classes is required.
Prerequisites: Must be 15 years old by the last date of the course. Successful completion of pre-course session that includes: demonstrate swimming skills consistent with the Level 4 Stroke Performance Chart by swimming 25 yards each of the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke, and 15 yards of the butterfly, maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling), & tread water for 1 minute.
WSI Blended Learning: This course has online modules that reduce the in-person class time. Expect to spend about 6 hours, 45 minutes to complete the online modules.

Hello! My name is Melinda Fierro. I am a long-time American Red Cross instructor in Aquatics and First Aid/CPR, with over 25 years of experience as an instructor and 20 years as an instructor trainer. I have worked for a variety of providers including locally both the Stillwater and North St. Paul/Maplewood Community Education departments, as well as, the Maplewood Community Center. I’ve also been previously employed full time with the American Red Cross both here in the Twin Cities Metro Area and San Diego/Los Angeles California in the areas of volunteer services, community education, and workplace programming.
I have experience training all ages, from 6 months to seniors in Water Safety, Lifeguarding, and Workplace programming. I have previous experience training instructors and instructor trainers in both a community and workplace environment.
I’ve been teaching for Stillwater Community Education for three years. I am also a resident of the wonderful community of Stillwater and my three kids attend Stillwater schools.
