Beyond Rio: Discover Brazil's Rich Musical Heritage

Discover the rich diversity of Brazilian music through an engaging guitar recital that goes beyond the familiar classics. Award-winning guitarist Alvaro Henrique draws on his doctoral research at the University of Minnesota to introduce audiences to rarely performed works by composers from across Brazil, representing a wide range of regions, cultures, and traditions.

Learn how Indigenous, Black, rural, and other underrepresented communities, along with women composers, have shaped Brazil's vibrant musical heritage. Through live performance and stories behind the music, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for Brazil's history, culture, and musical traditions. We'll also have Brazilian refreshments during the intermission.

About Alvaro Henrique

Alvaro Henrique is an award-winning Brazilian classical guitarist who has performed in approximately 20 countries. His recordings include Guerra-Peixe: Complete Works for Solo Guitar and Alvaro Henrique Plays Dilermando Reis. Through his performances and doctoral research at the University of Minnesota, he is dedicated to showcasing the diversity of Brazilian music and introducing audiences to composers and traditions that are often overlooked.
