Stillwater Community Education has a partnership with Safeway Driving School to offer a convenient teen driver education program in our schools. All instructors are licensed through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The program is divided into two phases: Classroom Phase: 30 hours of required classroom instruction that prepares the student to take the Minnesota permit test and to take on the responsibility of driving. After-school classes are offered at Stillwater Area High School. Make-up lessons can be completed in any other Stillwater Community Education class or Safeway classroom session. Students can take class at age 14½ but cannot take their permit test until age 15. Behind-the-Wheel Phase: After students pass the permit test, they are required to complete six hours of driving lessons. The lessons are provided in three two-hour lessons. Lessons can be scheduled by calling the Safeway office. Lessons can be scheduled online at www.safewaydrivingschool.com Parent Involvement: It is critical that parents plan to practice regularly with their newly permitted drivers. There is also a bi-monthly Parent Class offered at Safeway’s Stillwater classroom. Safeway strongly encourages all parents to review its Parent Information section at www.safewaydrivingschool.com. Fee: $434 We have two options for payment: 1) Pay in full up front (includes classroom instruction, materials and behind-the-wheel training). 2) Or, pay $254 to secure your spot int he classroom portion. Zoom Live Classroom Option The State of Minnesota requires that driver’s education distance learning be conducted in a face-to-face platform, which requires that students have a video camera and audio capabilities on their devices. Safeway has chosen a secure Zoom platform to conduct the class. Safeway will be emailing the classroom handouts and MN Driver’s Manual in pdf format for printing. Students will be required to be in front of the camera and interactive for the full three hour class. If you are unable to print the handouts/Driver Education manual- the materials can be picked up from the Central Services Building at 1875 Greeley St at the Community Education Window. Parents/guardians will be required to complete Safeway's Account Verification. Today's young adults are struggling, and the numbers prove it. Nearly half of 18- to 29-year-olds are still living at home. Many are sitting behind screens playing video games late into the night. Of those who leave home, one in four cuts off communications with their parents at some point during their young adult years. Gen Z (14-29-year-olds) are the most wired generation yet have the highest rates of loneliness (over 70%). Males in particular are falling behind in entering and completing college and entering the workforce. They are also our times more likely to experience deaths of despair- suicide, homicide, and accidents, including overdose, than females. These challenges are more than statistics.
